Languages

The study of languages provides opportunities for students to become more accepting of diversity, more respectful of others and more aware of their place in the international community.
At St Joseph’s Catholic College, we aim to foster the enjoyment of active participation in communicative language learning and cross-cultural experiences.

Students studying a language at St Joseph’s Catholic College learn to speak, listen, read and write in the target language through topics relevant to their personal world. Our students are encouraged to discover and reflect upon various aspects of customs and culture, and how they impact on language learning and daily communication.

We are committed to being creative in the selection of stimulating and challenging lesson content by using realia, current audio-visual resources, and integrating computer, internet and web technologies to support and enhance learning. Each language is taught by a specialist teacher in a dedicated classroom with shared access to an interactive whiteboard.

At St Joseph’s Catholic College, students have the opportunity to study either French or Japanese. Students begin their experience of learning a foreign language in Year 8 with the mandatory 100 hours language programme. For students who wish to continue the study of a language in Years 9 and 10, elective classes may be offered depending on student numbers.

If there are sufficient numbers of students wishing to undertake French or Japanese for the HSC, the Continuers Course may also be offered in Years 11 and 12. For dedicated students interested in extending their language learning beyond the classroom, there may also be the opportunity to participate in a cultural tour.
